FLUX Culture Lab
FLUX Culture Lab explores multiculturalism and artistic expression. The primary objective was to create a highly functional and adaptable space that could easily accommodate exhibitions of all types.
The gallery aims to foster a sense of community by nurturing relationships among individuals and promoting inclusivity, thereby uniting diverse people under a common umbrella of multiculturalism. To support community engagement and enhance the visitor experience, a café/wine bar was incorporated, offering a social space during exhibitions, and serving as a community hub for locals during the day.
For this project, artist Ola Volo is featured in an exhibition titled DIALOGUE. The space transformed into the embodiment of her art - a submersive and interactive experiece.

The project involved conducting several case studies to determine key requirements for a successful gallery, including appropriate lighting placement, building orientation, acoustics, and back-of-house considerations for administration, storage, and maneuverability of diverse art forms.
-
In addition to designing the gallery space, we carefully selected an artist whose work resonated deeply within their cultural context. Ola Volo, with her rich multicultural background permeating every piece she creates, was chosen. The exhibition, entitled "DIALOGUE," encapsulated Volo's unique storytelling approach, where silent visual narratives were meant to be interpreted and completed by viewers, enabling them to become part of the unfolding tales themselves. Volo's artistic fusion of Canadian West Coast and Kazakh influences embodies a truly multicultural perspective, expressed through a captivating blend of motifs and subject matter.
The exhibition itself was carefully crafted to encourage active engagement and connection with the art. Interactive spaces and immersive environments were purposefully designed to reinforce the artist's intentions and leave visitors with a profound sense of participation in the creative process.
-
Unfolding through a collection of Volo's works, individuals are encouraged to immerse themselves in the art allowing the lines between reality and imagination to blur. One can take part in the artistic process by assigning meaning and identity to Volo's open-ended narratives to become part of the storyline.
Lighting Analysis Study for the DIALOGUE Exhibition
-
The lighting design for the Dialogue exhibition was influenced by the artist's work. It employed high contrasts and warm light to mirror the elements present in the artist's pieces, effectively accentuating and drawing attention to key focal points. Furthermore, the strategic use of lower-level moody lighting, coupled with high contrast ratios, contributed to a dramatic ambiance while ensuring that the focus remained on the artwork.
